People who want to lose weight, often reduce the consumption of rice or other carbohydrate sources. Some of them replace carbohydrates with protein.

According to Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, RD, LD, for healthy people, high protein diet is not harmful if done in just a short time, for example three or four months, and can help them to lose weight. But, if this is done in the longer term, it could be bad for health.

Some people who perform a high protein diet, they restrict carbohydrate intake, which can lead to malnutrition. And cause health problems such as constipation, diverticulitis (inflammation of digestive tract), and increases the risk of several types of cancer, "says Zeratsky.

High protein diets often promote foods such as red meat and high-fat dairy products. Some experts believe that a diet rich in protein can increase the risk of heart disease. Also, it can damage the health of the liver or kidneys because the body has difficulty in removing all the waste products of protein metabolism.

If you want to run a high protein diet, do it only as an aid to short term weight loss programs. Choose a good protein. Such as fish, skinless chicken, lean beef, pork and dairy products low in fat. Choose high-fiber carbohydrates, such as whole grains and vegetables and fruits.

If you have kidney disease, liver or diabetes, and you are in treatment, or you are pregnant or nursing, consult your physician before starting a diet high in protein.
