High-fat diet can improve the health of the kidneys

Is it true that a high-fat diet can overcome kidney damage

Fats are oils of animal origin, in the form of solid and liquid. Fat is feared by many people because they cause obesity. However, a recent study says that the fat can repair the damage to the kidneys.

Fat serves as an energy reserve, because in each gram of fat contains calories as much as 9.3 kcal. In addition, fat is also a solvent of vitamin A, D, E and K are required in biological processes, and serves to protect the body from the external temperature.

Previous studies have shown that lowering blood sugar levels with a high-fat diet can prevent kidney failure. But this does not applicable to people who suffer from diabetes. Charles Mobbs, a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City said, the study shows that dietary intervention is sufficient to repair the kidney damage caused by diabetes.

Previously, several studies have been conducted in mice, providing them with a high-fat diet with the amount of carbs as much as 5%, 8% of protein and fat as much as 87%. This is done to determine whether a high-fat diet intervention can repair kidney damage due to diabetes.

"These findings provide significant impact for thousands of Americans are diagnosed with kidney failure and other complications due to diabetes" Mobbs added.

This story gives a lot of hope, but also have a serious problem. In November 2010, as reported by the New York Times Magazine, there was a family with a child having epilepsy. This child did not allowed to eat biscuits, macaroni and cheese for almost two years.

His father told reporters, Fred Vogelstein, that in one week, the children with epilepsy were given a quart of thick cream, 1/3 of butter, 20 slices of bacon, 13 teaspoons of coconut oil and 9 eggs. The high-fat diet was done because of a father's despair.

Mobbs claimed that a high fat diet are risky if applied to adult patients suffering from chronic diabetes. But they also said that this is quite reasonable, because there is the possibility that, pharmacologically, this diet has an effect that can restore kidney function for people with diabetes.
